Keyless Entry System
The key fob has an internal chip that allows it to communicate with your receiver module. If the key fob stops working suddenly, it's likely that the internal chip has been damaged. It could happen after dropping your key fob, or if a different keyfob doesn't work. In this situation you'll still be able to start the vehicle by pressing "Start" button on the key fob if the battery isn't dead.
If the key fob functions it will send an alert to the receiver module which informs it of which trunk or door is open. The module will then open the correct door or trunk to allow you to start and drive into the vehicle. When you press the button on the remote control, you are able to lock or unlock the car. Certain systems are smart enough to recognize a driver's specific fob, and will automatically lock the vehicle when they leave the vehicle.
Most Kia models come with a built-in keyless entry system, which includes the remote key fob as well as a flip keys with transponders. Transponder Chip Key
The transponder chip is a security device that transmits an unique code to the vehicle's immobilizer when it's put into the ignition. The immobilizer shuts off the fuel pump, starter motor, and any other devices that allow the car to run despite the identification code of the transponder chip.

Only an automotive locksmith or dealer can access the special programming machine needed to program some key fobs. Other keys however, don't have transponder chips, and thus aren't required to be programmed.
